Oct. 15 is Blog Action Day 2008
On October 15, Wednesday, we in Bloggers Kapihan invite Filipino bloggers to participate in Blog Action Day 2008 by taking a stand on poverty.
Poverty is a reality that we cannot deny. We see it everyday. Many live with and in it 24/7. The imperative now is to change this situation. The Blog Action Day 2008 is an opportunity to get poverty out from under the rug where the government has consigned it. We hope that through this renewed focus on poverty, it will be a new start to better understand and not hide it, to offer real solutions not fake ones, to salve the poor people’s wounds and not give them doleouts.
If you want to join Blog Action Day 2008, there are a number of things you can do:
- Blog about poverty on Oct. 15. Share your your ideas on how we as a people should confront it. You may also write about the bright future ahead if we manage to finally solve poverty that, contrary to much-trumpeted statistics, continue to deny millions of our people the benefits of freedom, justice, democracy and prosperity. You may suggest links on poverty and how Filipinos are getting by or, better yet, share powerful and compelling of Filipinos taking action against poverty. Others may post photos and videos on or of our poor people that show their dignity amid their daily struggles to eke out a living. You may also start an online debate on anti-poverty measures amid the financial crisis gripping the world today.
- Popularize the event by inviting other bloggers to go to this site, post the some buttons and banners on your blog and make sure to link back to this site.
- Donate money or your personal to concrete actions that empower the poor and marginalized.
No doubt about it, now is the time to think and act on poverty.
If you choose to act, thank you in advance and kindly do the following so we and the world would know Filipinos taking a stand on poverty:
- Register and post a comment here if you intend to join.
- In your Oct. 15 blog post on poverty, please link to this post.
Thank you!

Poverty in spirit or poverty in material things?
If in cash or assets, the Philippines is the richest country in the world and top European banks know this fact. At one point in our history, the Philippines was able to borrow from international financial institutions only because of the personal guarantee of Ferdinand Marcos. Only when the political leadership stops being greedy; start having their balls and stop believing in the Federal Reserve can the Philippines move these funds into the country to begin making this nation the envy of all other countries.
Take a look at the following:
1. We have all the best engineers, technicians, programmers, teachers, etc. and these are assets the world can not live without because once you pull out all these Filipinos from their present placements, the world will go on a standstill and it will only be the Philippines which will be doing great;
2. The country is the biggest source of deuterium which makes fossil fuel a thing of the past; all the metallic minerals industry needs; and aquatic and agricultural resources which China needs; and
3. Substantial cash which are in the names of various Filipios are kept in major banks which the anti-money laundering council (Paris) and certain vested interests want to get so as not to allow the country to grow.
We only need someone who has access to substantial funds that he/she does not need to steal or return favors when elected so that the leader, without baggages, can realign resources and rationalize policies so as to generate the employment that nation building requires. The present crop of would-be Presidential candidates would be dependent on contributors for their campaign whom they would have to satisfy once elected that makes them hostage to a never-ending cycle of corruption.
Economics 11 taught me that to prop up an economy, you only need to harness the construction industry and the automotive industry. When construction work is done simultaneously all over the country at the same time, people will all be so busy that politics will just die a natural death and people will not even have time to steal or waste time being stooges of politicians.

Is there ever such a thing as “poverty of the spirit”?
Anyways, it’s clear that by poverty we mean the gross inequality in the distribution of wealth in Philippine society that has been going on since foreign colonizers occupied the islands.
This is the poverty that the up coming Blog Action Day is going to address or highlight.

Financial Poverty is a reality in our society. What we have to do is to help minimize its worst effect for those who are within this group. But the problem is the more we have financially poor individuals there are also more numerous people who are morally poor, who cannot see his/her social duties and obligations as a human being in a human society.
If we advocated to help the naturally disabled people. Then we should also extend our hands to those who are victims of social and man made disabilities or imperfections.
I believe the principles of RELATIVITY is not only applicable in science but it applies also to our daily existence as one of the mortal and fragile species in this planet. We are not a great nation because we do not know how to help others and work with each other. But if we can do the reverse then greatness of our race is just one step away.
Survival of the Fittest or Natural Selection is the law of the animals or lifeless matters, according to the law of evolution. But, as advocated by Jesus Christ, all human beings, being created in likeness and image of God, should be taken cared of, regardless of his status in life.

The real cause of poverty in the Philippines is not due to lack of education, resources or because Filipinos are lazy.
It’s because of corruption.
Corrupt officials tend to be more corrupt because they are in the position to do it. They have the opportunity to do it. They have the power to do it.
Because poor people are “powerless” they can’t do nothing with it. They just let them do it.
Few families like the ayalas, tans, lopezes, aquinos, marcoses sys etc etc controls the resources that the people need to live everyday from electricity, water, food, clothing to land. Wealth is not distributed evenly to the people who really need it.

no. 1 reason is corruption..everyone wants to be a politician not to help make the country better but to make money..also stupid decisions like travel ban here in Iraq..third countries like ours can’t afford to have a travel ban because we need jobs which the government cannot give, lets face it we are a poor country..Filipino’s working here gets $800 to $5000 monthly..i can say that we are safe because we are working inside US bases (HEAVILY FORTIFIED)..American Companies likes working with FILIPINOS which our officials should not take for granted but because of the stupid ban they cannot hire more & the one’s already here cannot go to vacation..like me earning $2000 monthly & has a every 6 mos vacation but cannot go of fear not be able to come back..CORRUPTION AND BAD DECISIONS..JUST LOOK CLOSER ON THESE 2 MAYBE PHILIPPINES STILL HAS A CHANCE TO BE A COUNTRY THAT OTHER ASIAN COUNTRIES LOOK UP TO LIKE BEFORE!!!

This country needs more millionaires with a loving heart. This country needs more millionaires who can commit to help the less fortunate. This country needs more millionaires who can commit to shorten the gap between the mass and the affluent. This country needs more millionaires to become a channel of hope to our financially depressed brothers and sisters – thus gradually alleviating poverty.

We need a culture change in our attitudes and re-emphasize the importance of moral values and nationalism in our institutions.
Attitudes- the “bahala na”,”saka na”, “bukas na lang”, “pwede na yan”, “akala ko”,”lingas bao”,etc….usually leads to the common cause of failures in our tasks
– we must learn to accept reality and must not easily be carried out by our emotions,,,could this be caused by listening or watching too much dramas in our early age?
– ang pagiging laging “negative” ang thinking on issues, proposals and suggestions lalo na kung coming from the “rival” group
Moral Values/Nationalism – “Re-emphasize, refresh, back to the basic” sa dahilang dapat sa panahong ito ay “minimal o zero(???)” na ang corruption…pero sa aking nakikita ay pa-grabe pa sa coming generations o sa bagong lahi papalit sa akin

‘World Foodless Day’: Globalization, Profiteering, Behind Worsening Food Crisis
Global food prices have risen by 75% since 2000, according to the World Bank, while prices of rice, corn, wheat, and soybean have hit all-time highs. Prices of meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products naturally follow the upward trends of grains prices. Amid the global financial crisis, increased speculation in food and fuel prices is seen as a possible consequence that will further push food prices up and worsen the poor’s access to food.
The world is facing its worst food crisis that has been aggravated by agriculture trade liberalization policies imposed by international finance institutions (IFIs) like the International Monetary Fund and trade bodies such as the World Trade Organization. These policies have allowed intensified profiteering by food transnational corporations (TNCs). In fact while more and more people go hungry everyday, TNCs such as Cargill and grain traders such as Archer Daniels Midland reported increased profits as of the first quarter of 2008.
TNCs in its desire for more profits have continued to lobby IFIs and Third World government to implement globalization policies in food and agriculture, including liberalization of trade and investment in agriculture, privatization of public organs in agricultural extension services such as irrigation, trading and the like, and deregulation of government roles in pricing, marketing and even land reforms. These globalization policies compound the deep crisis of agriculture and food production in underdeveloped countries due to decades-old landlessness of farmers, backwardness of their tools and production, monopoly of land, tools and inputs, TNC control in production and trade, and government neglect. Thus, ironically, hunger is at its worst in rural communities in the Third World where most food and agricultural production take place.
Globalization has not only resulted in the increasing bankruptcy and worsening poverty and hunger of farmers and consumers, but also in continuously eroding local production and self-sufficiency of Third World countries.
Civil society, peasant groups, and people’s organizations around the world consider World Food Day an opportune time to send a strong message that farmers and people of the Third World reject globalization, trade liberalization, and TNC profiteering of agriculture. It is also a time to recognize the successful efforts of broad alliances of farmers and people’s organizations for strengthened protests against globalization, struggle against genuine agrarian reform, and relentlessly demand for social accountability. World Foodless Day events are being held in more than fourteen countries across Asia and being supported by civil society groups around the globe.
